Metal crowds can be unforgiving when a new album released by a band is not what they expected, and that's understandable. Great album, needs some patience to fully appreciate whats going on, I listened to one disc for a week then moved on to the next one again for a week, then the music slowly opens up to you, if you don't know it's a rock opera, not the heaviest of DT albums but as two disc set I think thats a good thing, no embarrassing Muse rip-offs, quite an original album that could sit along side great concept albums of the past like Tommy, Quadrophenia, S.F. Astonishing definition is - causing a feeling of great surprise or wonder : surprising. bought this cd and the music to Frozen was on it ? Please guys, come back to us. Overall, it's a great album....just not a DT album. The vinyl was flawless. Big DT fan, but this album is rather weak and mellow. Let's take it a step further. If I want 'pleasant' there are plenty of other bands I can listen to, but I want excitement and stimulation from D T, this offering however is bloated, pompous and somewhat self indulgent.

I feel if you read through with the lyrics, the story is quite clear for the most part. Saw them do this live and was kinda disappointed.
Petrucci entrusted the character voices to vocalist James LaBrie, who executes them authoritatively with his vast range and remarkable control.
8 Musicians of this calibre can at least be allowed a little slack here and there but this is no slack production- the musical complexity, masterful musicianship, simple yet striking passages and yes, even fun sections are delivered in classic DT style with massive clarity and fullness.

There are plenty of first rate Prog Metal moments in here, much tighter than anything on "A Dramatic Turn of Events", and much more substantial than anything on "Dream Theater".

As a musician who has listened to them since the 1990s I can tell you their last 2 albums are their best.
